Commons:Expert identification or categorization requests

From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository
Commons:What is this? redirects here. A better name for this page can be found on the talk page or at VillagePump.

Here you can ask about what is depicted in a file or ask for a file to be categorized. If a request remains unsolved and you can't help either, propose other places where to ask about instead. Unsolved requests may be bundled in a Village Pump post (monthly or once it's 5-10 requests).

See Commons:Categorization requests for requests of categorizing files into existing categories.

Create a new section for every new request and sign it in case there are questions (use ~~~~):

Please mark solved requests as resolved by adding {{Section resolved|1=~~~~}} to the section.

Airplane turbulence

[edit]

Is there a category for these kind(s) of turbulences? If not, maybe somebody should create one.--Prototyperspective (talk) 10:19, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Prototyperspective, see category:Orographic waves. JayCubby (talk) 13:27, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, do these cause all airplane turbulences? Either way it seems like it would need a new category (which could be a subcategory if the answer to the prior question is yes) for airplane turbulences in specific then. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:30, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Prototyperspective, that I do not know. You'd be better off asking at the RefDesk JayCubby (talk) 13:34, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tiled windows

[edit]

What's the name of the window type of the window on the right? Prototyperspective (talk) 11:21, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from being paned with glass block? - Jmabel ! talk 12:46, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's a description, not a name. I wouldn't be surprised if there already was a category for it too. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:55, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Prototyperspective, user:Jmabel is spot-on with Category:Glass block windows JayCubby (talk) 01:38, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you two – added the category. (Jmabel didn't name or link any category and it read like a description and it wasn't the name of the category.) Btw, I don't know why that category is subcategorized by and only by location. Doesn't make much sense to categorize these by country. It would make more sense to categorize them for example by room type or decade. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:45, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Anything more specific about the ropework here?

[edit]

Clearly the main knot here is at least a variant of bowline on a bight, but is there anything else worth mentioning/categorizing, or a more specific term for this particular arrangement of rope? - Jmabel ! talk 04:30, 25 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Snow covered with dirt

[edit]

Do we have any category for snow covered with dirt (like this one from mountains in summer, after thaw)? — Draceane talkcontrib. 21:41, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

From Classifications of snow: Snirt – Snirt is an informal term for snow covered with dirt, especially where strong winds pick up topsoil from uncovered farm fields and blow it into nearby snowy areas. Also, dirty snow left over from plowing operations. There doesn't seem to be a category for it yet: Category:Snirt (also checked the search; btw Category:Snow covered with dirt may be good to redirect to it and it would be best if also a Wikidata item existed for all the snow types listed at Classifications of snow). Prototyperspective (talk) 22:32, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Prototyperspective: Thank you. As far as I understand, snirt is more like that snow visible everywhere in the cities, but that one above is more natural – like a precurscor for a glacier (but never getting to last over the summer in these conditions). — Draceane talkcontrib. 22:41, 8 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
