Bode (M81) and Cigar (M82) galaxies in Ursa Major

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On the left is the galaxy named after its discoverer Johann Elert Bode — Bode's Galaxy (Messier 81) — and on the right is the galaxy called the Cigar Galaxy (Messier 82) due to its shape. Both galaxies are located about 12 million light-years away from us. Bode is a classic spiral galaxy with a diameter of approximately 90,000 light-years, while the Cigar is a prototypical starburst galaxy — a galaxy undergoing extremely active star formation. This activity is believed to have been triggered by the Cigar's recent (in cosmic terms) close passage by Bode, which disturbed the hydrogen gas within the galaxy that had been in relative gravitational equilibrium. As a result, although the Cigar is about ten times smaller than the Milky Way, it is five times brighter, and its core is a hundred times brighter. In the Cigar Galaxy, one can also see reddish hydrogen gas filaments stretching thousands of light-years from its center. In addition to the two large galaxies, Bode's orbit also hosts a small satellite galaxy called Holmberg IX.

The photo was taken in early March 2024 from the town of Tõrva, Estonia.

Eesti: Vasakul selle avastaja Johann Elert Bode järgi Bode nime kandev galaktika (Messier 81) ja paremal kuju järgi Sigariks kutsutud galaktika (Messier 82). Mõlemad galaktikad asuvad meist umbes 12 miljoni valgusaasta kaugusel. Bode on klassikaline spiraalgalaktika, läbimõõduga umbes 90 tuhat valgusaastat ja Sigar on prototüüpne tähepurske galaktika ehk galaktika, milles käib väga aktiivne täheteke.

Foto on tehtud 2024. aasta märtsi alguses Eestist, Tõrva linnast.
